About CR2 to JPG

What is CR2?

CR2 (Canon RAW version 2) is Canon's proprietary RAW image format used by DSLR and mirrorless cameras including the EOS 5D, 6D, 7D, 80D, and Rebel series. CR2 files store 14-bit unprocessed sensor data, giving photographers complete control over exposure, white balance, and color in post-production. Individual CR2 files range from 20-45MB depending on the camera's megapixel count.

Why convert to JPG?

CR2 files require Adobe Lightroom, Canon's Digital Photo Professional, or similar RAW editors to open. Most people, devices, and platforms can't view CR2 files at all. Convert to JPG when sharing photos with clients who don't have photo editing software, posting to social media, uploading to websites, or when you need quick viewable copies of your shoots.

What to expect from the conversion

The conversion processes Canon's 14-bit sensor data into an 8-bit JPG with automatic exposure, white balance, and color adjustments. Quality is excellent for sharing and viewing, though professional photographers will prefer manual RAW processing for critical work. File sizes decrease from 25-45MB to 3-8MB per image. Canon-specific metadata (shooting mode, lens info, focus points) is preserved in the EXIF data.

How FluidConvert handles it

We use professional-grade RAW decoding that accurately interprets Canon's color science, producing JPGs with natural skin tones and accurate colors straight from the CR2.

Common reasons to convert CR2 to JPG

  • Sending Canon DSLR photos to clients who need viewable JPGs, not RAW files
  • Posting wedding or event photos from a Canon camera to social media quickly
  • Creating JPG contact sheets from a CR2 photo shoot for client selection
  • Sharing Canon camera photos with a team using phones and tablets that can't open CR2

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Canon lens correction data carry over to JPG?

The EXIF metadata including lens model, focal length, and aperture is preserved. However, in-camera lens corrections (chromatic aberration, distortion) stored in the CR2 are only applied if the conversion engine processes them — optical corrections may not be identical to Canon's own software.

What's the difference between CR2 and CR3?

CR3 is Canon's newer RAW format used in cameras from 2018 onward (EOS R system, newer Rebels). CR3 uses more efficient compression for smaller files. Both contain the same 14-bit sensor data. FluidConvert supports both formats.

Should I shoot in CR2+JPG or just CR2 and convert later?

Shooting CR2-only saves card space and gives you maximum flexibility. Convert to JPG only for the images you need to share quickly. Keep all CR2 files as your master archive for future editing.
