About AVIF to PNG

What is AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a next-generation image format based on the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It delivers 30-50% smaller files than WEBP and up to 50% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality. AVIF supports HDR, wide color gamut, 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, and alpha transparency. Chrome, Firefox, and recent Safari versions support it, but many desktop apps, email clients, and older browsers cannot open AVIF files.

Why convert to PNG?

Despite AVIF's technical superiority, PNG remains the universal standard for lossless images. Convert AVIF to PNG when you need to open images in software that doesn't support AVIF yet, when editing in photo applications without AVIF support, or when uploading to platforms that haven't adopted the new format. PNG's 25+ years of universal support makes it the safe fallback.

What to expect from the conversion

If the AVIF was losslessly compressed, the PNG output is pixel-perfect — no quality loss. If the AVIF used lossy compression, PNG preserves exactly what was in the AVIF without further degradation. File sizes increase since PNG's DEFLATE compression isn't as efficient as AVIF's AV1 codec — expect files 3-5x larger. Alpha transparency is fully preserved.

How FluidConvert handles it

We decode AVIF using the reference dav1d decoder for maximum compatibility and accuracy, supporting both lossy and lossless AVIF variants with proper color profile handling.

Common reasons to convert AVIF to PNG

  • Opening AVIF images downloaded from modern websites in image editors that don't yet support AVIF
  • Converting AVIF screenshots to PNG for use in documentation or presentations
  • Making AVIF images from web archives compatible with older operating systems
  • Preparing AVIF images with transparency for use in design tools without AVIF support

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AVIF better than PNG for image quality?

AVIF can achieve smaller files at the same quality as PNG (when using lossy mode) or match PNG's lossless quality at smaller sizes (when using lossless mode). AVIF is technically superior but lacks PNG's universal support.

Will AVIF transparency be preserved in PNG?

Yes. Both formats support full alpha transparency channels including semi-transparent pixels. Your transparent backgrounds and opacity gradients transfer perfectly.

Why can't I open AVIF files on my computer?

AVIF is still a relatively new format (2019). Older versions of Photoshop, Windows Photos, and many image viewers haven't added support yet. Windows 11 added native AVIF support, but Windows 10 requires the AV1 extension from the Microsoft Store.
